In June 2026, our Secondary 5 students Poon Yik-cheung, Yeung Man, and Chan Wang-toa participated in the Build a Smart City Competition 2026, organized by the Faculty of Construction and Environment at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPolyU).
The team was assigned the challenging topic "Surveying the Future: A Smart Solution for 'Double Ageing'." This task required the students not only to investigate the structural deterioration of old tenement buildings (Tong Lau) in traditional neighborhoods, but also to address the pressing lifestyle needs of an aging population.

To prepare for the challenge, HKPolyU organized a comprehensive two-day workshop to enhance the students' coding and artificial intelligence (AI) skills. The team was also guided on a field visit to To Kwa Wan, an old urban district, to conduct on-site surveys and directly observe the issues facing the community.
In response to these challenges, the team conducted extensive research and problem analysis. Leveraging their engineering, programming, and AI expertise, they designed and created a specialized robot tailored specifically for the rugged environments of Hong Kong's tenement buildings.

Their dedication, creative problem-solving skills, and seamless teamwork earned high praise from the panel of judges and were awarded 1st Runner-up in the competition.

This meaningful experience not only deepened their understanding of smart city technology, but also demonstrated how STEM innovation can be applied to solve real-world community issues. Congratulations to the team on their outstanding achievement!
